JOHN BADCOCK  |  SUMMER PAINTINGS

This latest collection of en-plein-air paintings are of South Canterbury fields… radish, chrysanthemum, carrot seed and views of South Canterbury.

John brings the surrounding landscape into the gallery in heavy oil laden panels. Hisdesire to paint light and its changing, ephemeral qualities are prevalent throughout the summer season.

Painting outside is challenging due to the fugitive light and constantly changing atmospheric environmental conditions. Plein air paintings are prized for their spontaneity and freshness and this is certainly visible in John’s works you will see in this exhibition.

“My painting is entirely autobiographical, it tells you where I am at any given time, where I am living and the direction I am painting”. John Badcock

SUSAN BADCOCK | AORAKI/MT COOK NATIONAL PARK

“Black and white with a hint of colour. This is how I see the world”.

This series draws inspiration from Whites Aviation’s photography and the masters of hand-colouring.

In August 2021 Susan photographed the Hooker Valley looking up to Aoraki/Mt Cook and the Tasman Glaciers. Photographing the rugged land of ice and rock of New Zealand’s highest mountain Aoraki/Mt Cook and the Tasman glacial lake.

Mt Tasman lake is serene, capturing the stillness and freshness of the air. Icebergs reflecting mountains and the cloud that floats aloft Aoraki, (for ever fly, stay aloft) refers to the cloak that often surrounds Aoraki.

All six photographs have been meticulously hand coloured using oil-based photo paint that is rubbed and manipulated with cotton. A photo and a painting all in one.
